Thanks for stopping by and reading the blog of the trials, tribulations and ultimate rewards of making my first documentary, "The Blue Edge" based on the books and the life of legendary freediver/photographer and writer, Carlos Eyles. I hope that in sharing my experience making this film, the true definition of a labor of love, that I might inspire others to do one of two things:
1) tell a story - in words, pictures or film/video
2) enter the ocean
HOW IT HAPPENED
A few years ago, Rob Hess, a friend of mine handed me a book called "The Blue Edge" by a man named Carlos Eyles. Rob knew I was developing a television series for China called Ocean Safaris which would focus on a particular individual person each episode who was tied to a particular ocean.
I read the book that night and immediately told my cameraman partner, John Tarver to get a copy. He read it and said exactly what I was thinking, "this is not an episode of a TV series, this is an entire movie."
I got in touch with Carlos and gave him a call. Within five minutes I realized that we had an easy rapport...it was like we knew one another for years. I gave him my pitch and arranged to go to Hawaii to meet him and his wife Margaret. So began my personal odyssey that I will relate in this blog.
